Artist Capacity

Capacity is a Word that gets thrown around the offices of OYE a lot. We have programs of capacity building and all of our students have incredible capacity, but what does this capacity mean to the people that have it?

I attended a drawing class, part of our new Arte La Calle program, and not only did I receive a great lesson in drawing, but I also had the opportunity to talk with some of the OYE students about capacity. We talked about what it was, and what it means.

By the end of the lesson I realized that its true OYE students have incredible capacity. They described to me what this word means, and according to our scholars, capacity is the potential a person has to do something. Moreover, it is the ability to apply ones self to acquire the knowledge necessary to do that thing.

After talking for a while we came to the conclusion that, while everyone has some capacity, we are not necessarily endowed with the same type of capacity. In this vein, the program of art that I attended today is a perfect example. Gerald, the OYE scholar that was instructing us has an incredible capacity for making and teaching art. When he looks at an object he sees it through the eyes of an artistic and can reproduce its slightest shadow. He can look at an image and see how to draw it with a mind for the shadows and reflections. As a teacher he demonstrates a tremendous capacity of patience with his raucous students. When all was said and done, those of us that participated in his class produced some nice works of art, even if they could not rival those of Gerald. We all had the capacity to produce art, but we might not have realized it without the guidance of Gerald.

This is the type of capacity and capacity building OYE is talking about. Capacity is simply the ability to learn to do. Capacity is nothing without the desire to act, and it is amplified when a helping hand or guidance is lent to another. As we hope to create a village of socially engaged artists through our art program, we hope to create a community of socially conscious and responsible citizens through our capacity classes.

Marcha de la Joventud

At 7:30 AM OYE students crowded into the office. Dressed alike in blue OYE Mi Voz shirts, they formed a sea of blue with picket signs floating in hand. At 8 o-clock the sea of youth poured out of the office to join the march. Hundreds of students from local high schools and other youth foundations convened at El Progreso's central park. Youth from accross the city came to this event, organized by Unifec and Comvida, to demonstrate their voice and promote their rights. Themes of the march included equal rights with no discrimination based on race, color, sex, language, or religion.





Furthermore, the youth participating in this event demanded that their government be responible to protect youth from physical and mental abuse, mistreatment, and exploitation.

OYE students appeared to enjoy themselves and feel very at home participating in such an event. The themes of the event mirrored many themes that OYE touches upon in our capacity programs and coincides very well with our global vision and the mission of our foundation. To see OYE students occupying public space and to demonstrate their voice, their power, and demand to be heard and respected was a awesome site.



As the event came to a close, representatives from various youth oriented organizations were asked to speak. Representatives from local high schools said a few words, a couple religious organizations shared their sentiments, and Yarli Yanes spoke for OYE.

In conclusion the event was well organized and the youth were well represented. True to the culture of Honduras' youth the event was fun with music and dancing. The youth demonstrated their potential as leaders and potential to raise their voices in unision to ask for their rights to be defended. After events such as this I can't help but think that both the future and the present look very bright for this country.

This weeks video was taken by American University volunteer Sarah McIntosh while Teleprogreso interviewed OYE el Ritmo youth about their upcoming benefit concert with Guillermo Anderson. Students were interviewed for a half hour. OYE staff and American University students even got involved!

This clip of the week was taking during one of our the Magazine meetings where we started the meeting with a 3 min ice breaker. Or at least that is what Marisol thinks.

As for the rest of the OYE team, we like to call this "Aerobics with Marisol". Feel free to whip out your strech pants, clear the living room and sweat along.

This is an Ode to Sam and his adventure in Campos Bananeros.



Los Campos Bananeros (Banana Plantactions) is an area 40 minutes away from the center of Progreso. Which were heavely affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. When we went to home visits out in the Campos the community took the new volunteers in a heartbeat. The men in the community were very fond of Sam and offered him food, drink and even their horse!

Here is more from OYE's youth magazine. The first few seconds show the calm before the storm as Yapa and Raúl, the Magazines youth coordinators, receive, count and begin to organize 1000 magazines.

Afterwards Yapa and Raúl distribute magazines to each of the youth in the magazine. If you can catch a glimpse the excitement makes it hard to maintain a line. Students jump at the chance to share the magazine with their friends and families.

Last week we got serious with planning OYE, writing projects and budgets for 2010. So we took a break during lunch and let off some steam....

I still can't believe I am posting this Clip of the week but I promised Luis I would. So, will I bring you the championship match from 2009 between Luis Paredes and Katherine Burdine...

Graffiti Workshop

OYE was invited to a local Graffiti Workshop at La Fragua. A Mexican street artist named Pancho taught students basic stencil skills and spray techniques. A majority of the participants created aggressive political stencils or classic Che Guevara cut outs. OYE students separated themselves to push their techniques and create a four-color stencil. They created their own version of OYE's famous mayan design created in 2007 by David Otero.

The "Mi voz es Poder" mural was painted in 2009 by James Madison University Students, designed by Kat Burdine

The Radio Sound booth was built and painted by George Washington students in 2009.

Clip of the Week

Welcome to OYE's Clip of the week! We would like to share the sights and sounds of life in El Progreso through the eyes of our volunteers, staff and students.

This week we are focusing on the radio program, OYE el Ritmo. The clip below was taken last Friday in Radio Progreso, a national show seen by many as the voice to the people. OYE students worked together the last few months selling raffle tickets and working to raise money for some radio equipment that they need to continue recording, namely a microphone and speakers. Radio Progreso invited OYE el Ritmo to hold the raffle live on their show. The young woman with the braids is Yarli, she is the student coordinator of the radio and comfortable with the mic. The young man speaking is Gerald; this is his first time on live radio and gets a little nervous...

This was an important step for OYE el Ritmo. Not only were they able to gain experience at a major radio station but also raising money to buy their equipment strengthened bonds and instilled pride in the work they are doing. Enjoy this weeks Clip of the Week.

Clip of the Week

Welcome to OYE second clip of the week. This video was taken by OYE staff while driving through the center early one morning. Throughout the day these streets are packed with pedestrian traffic, cars and vendors. When you first arrive in Progreso it can be one of the most confusing, and overwhelming places. However, after spending a little bit of time there, these 10 square blocks become a treasure trove of fresh produce, cheap clothing, hilarious interactions and brilliant adventures.

Hola from Patty in 2 de Marzo.

This quick clip is of a girl, Patty, waving and hiding behind "la pila" in her back year. A pila is a cement washing basin and wash board. They are used for pretty much everything, from bathing, to washing clothes, to storing water when there is none. You will be hard pressed to find a house without one!

A taste of OYE el Ritmo

As we look through pictures and edit videos to share with you here is a taste of OYE el Ritmo yesterday. 

It was a huge party with more then 300 youth,  five dance groups, and four bands! 

The party lasted from 3:30- 7:15.
